Jump Off the Boat

Overcome Fear of Jumping into Open Water

What to Expect

Jump into the Blue

Jumping off a boat into the blue is about overcoming fear of jumping into deep open water and making your way back to the boat peacefully.

This class is for people who have already jumped into deep water in a pool at least a handful of times. You know if you have.

What You'll Learn:

  • Become comfortable jumping off a boat into the blue
  • You're more buoyant in salt water
  • How to swim back to the boat peacefully
  • The animals in the ocean are not out to get you
  • How far you go down, how fast you come up, and that no work is required
  • Perhaps we'll learn a bit about waves, depending on the weather

What's Included:

  • Three 3-hour classes over two days
  • 1 hour or so of dry-land discussion at each class
  • 2 hours of in-ocean training at each class
  • Fun

  • Boat with captain, restroom and shade, licensed instructor and spotter
  • Noodles, inner tubes, lifejackets for first steps off the boat

What You'll Need:

  • Two bathing suits
  • Goggles and sunglasses
  • Swim cap if you wear one
  • Rash guard
(should fit you like your skin)
  • Sun block, towel, flip flops, extra dry t-shirt for boat, hat
  • To know that in inclement weather, we could not go out on the boat. Weather-permitting, we'd go out Sunday morning from 8-2. There's a small chance that we couldn't go Sunday, either. Please plan your flights to leave late Sunday if possible.

Jump off the Boat Course FAQs

What are the prerequisites for this course?

You must take the Beginning Course and Ocean 101 before attending this course.

You also must be able jump into the deep end of the pool: you've done it at least five times. We'll review that on Friday of the course.

What if there is a storm?
At the first sign of thunder or lightning, we leave the water and the beach. We'll wait in hopes of it passing over. There's never been a time yet that we weren't able to deliver the full course. Let's hope our luck continues.
What is the age range of class members?

20 to 90. Older students are welcome! And, we have had some high school students by special arrangement. Most students are 30-65.

What if I wear contacts/glasses?

You may wear them under goggles if you wish. Or, you can buy goggles that have your prescription ground into them. Choose a pair of goggles that fit your face and don’t leak, first. Then have them ground.

Should I eat before class?

We recommend eating lightly but enough that hunger won’t distract you in class. Remember we are on land for an hour before we get into the pool.

Why do your classes cost what they cost?

First, our classes are three to five times longer than traditional classes. They have to be, in order to deliver what you want and what we promise.

Secondly, our instructors are specially trained, committed adults.

Third, we incur pool expenses wherever we teach and we often have travel expenses.

Fourth, your course fee pays our employees’ salaries, instructors’ fees, and all our annual overhead. Whereas the YMCA covers some of their costs via United Way donations, other YMCA programs, and local fundraising efforts, and other traditional swim classes are subsidized by tax bases in municipal learn-to-swim programs, we do not and are not. It’s all on you.

Lastly, we researched this original, breakthrough teaching technology that isn’t available anywhere else. Yet it’s virtually the only way to learn to truly prevent panic and overcome your fear in water. We have 34 years’ experience giving our flagship course: teaching adults who are afraid in water to swim and to prevent panic. There is no one with this experience and no greater value than our classes in the Learn-to-Swim universe.

“The best approach I’ve ever come across – life’s too short to not conquer this fear, especially when you live in FL!”
