“Is Your Beginning Class For Me?”
It’s for everyone who is afraid in water over his/her head. It is for many people who don’t think they’re afraid, who would say, “I love the water. I just don’t know what to do in deep water. I can swim across the pool but I can’t stop in the middle.” Or, “I can do the stroke but I’ve never been able to learn the breathing. I’m tense.”
For perhaps the first time, you will be in a class designed for people who seek the same answers you seek: “How do I learn to be safe in deep water? How do I stop myself from panicking in water over my head? How can I enjoy putting my face in the water and floating and getting out of a float, front and back? What are the secrets everyone else seems to know except me? How do I learn to be in control and to rely on myself for my safety rather than on the bottom or the side?”
You’ll feel safe all the time. We’ll never ask you to do anything that might make you panic, or to do anything you don’t want to do. We won’t tell you to relax. You ask, “How can I learn if I never push myself to do anything I don’t want to do?” The answer is, “The same way you learned to walk and talk.” You will find your swimming unfolding in a natural, effortless way because you will start at the beginning and skip no steps.
You’ll be met at your level and your questions will all be answered. There’s no pressure and no hurry. You’ll hear what you’ve always wanted to hear and learn what you’ve always wanted to know. You’ll have time to explore, experiment and practice, ask questions, and be spotted by a specially trained instructor or a spotter when you need assistance. If you let yourself go at your own pace, you cannot possibly fail. Have you ever heard of an adult swimming class with a money-back guarantee? We have one because we can.
Beginning 1 or Beginning 2?
What do we cover?
Beginning 1: At your own pace, you’ll learn how to be in control and prevent panic; how to put your face in HAPPILY; to keep water out of your nose; to be at ease in very shallow water and play; how to float and stand up; to feel the water holding you up: to be yourself in the shallow; to begin to be the swimmer you’re born to be. Beginning 1 students self-describe as “terrified” in shallow water, or they were so when they began adult swimming lessons.
Beginning 2: The above material plus: begin to trust yourself in the deep; how to move from here to there comfortably and without effort; how the water works; how to let the water do the work for you; to maneuver at will from back to front and change directions; that deep water holds you up; to replace your unwanted beliefs about water with beliefs you want. There’s so much material in a Beginning classes that it takes 24 hours. It’s 8 three-hour sessions, one hour on land and 2 hours in a warmer-than-usual pool. A Beginning 1 student usually follows with a Beginning 2 class as a next step. Then the Next Step class can be taken. Wetsuit vests are provided in Sarasota. Elsewhere, we recommend that you purchase one ($30). The Beginning class takes you as far as you can go in 24 class- hours. Everyone learns a different amount. We cannot predict what you will know when you finish the Beginning class. In the Next Step class you continue to learn. The goal of our Beginning and Next Step classes, combined, is freedom in the deep: to stay afloat calmly and move around in deep water for as long as you wish. Sometimes this occurs in the Beginning class. Sometimes it takes more than one Next Step class. After becoming free in deep water, it will be possible to learn strokes with breathing because you feel safe. All learning is at your own pace. The teaching and course content are second to none.
Miracle Swimming has flourished for 34 years because we remove all causes for worry, provide warm enough temperatures, start at the beginning and skip no steps….and because the 5 Circles teaching model is infallible. It’s built solely on having fun: your kind of fun. Countless references available: see our Student Comments page. Were you hoping this existed? People say it sounds too good to be true. You’ve found it at last! Want confirmation? Read our book. The e-book is $12.
What is swimming?
Strokes are part of swimming, but they’re not all of swimming. It’s also comfort in water, confidence, and being in control: the ability to rely on yourself for your safety in water, whether shallow or deep, pool, lake, or ocean. You need to know how the water works, and how to remain in control. Neither is related to arms and legs. Neither is taught in traditional swimming lessons.
What’s the solution?
Thirty-nine years ago, as a traditionally trained swim instructor teaching a college beginning swimming class, M. Ellen Dash asked why the system was not working for ten of her twenty students. The answer was simple: with their attention on survival, they could not focus on swimming skills. A new system was required. It came to her several years later: simple, universal, elegant.
We hope you’ll join us and find out what’s possible in the world of adult beginning swim lessons. Miracle Swimming is the leader.
